Sales professionals who want to learn from the best should perhaps start taking notes on the habits of a score of individuals identified by the Sales Lead Management Association. Yesterday, the SLMA named 2011′s “20 Women to Watch in Sales Lead Management.”

An official statement on the matter explained that this wasn’t determined by any sort of random drawing. The honor wasn’t of the “pay $50 to get your name on a certificate” variety, either.

Instead, “The nominees were judged on their contributions to a combination of marketing, sales and sales lead management efforts. Additional qualifications, such as board positions, book and article authorships, professional presentations on behalf of the subject of sales lead management and marketing ROI, were taken into account.”

So Ron Goodman, VP of Business Development at the SLMA, said, “It is with pleasure that the SLMA publishes the list and photos of the 20 Women to Watch in Sales Lead Management for 2011. We are greatly impressed with all of the nominees and our independent judges had a difficult time picking the 20 winners out of the names submitted.”

Now for the list of names. It starts with Ardath Albee (of Marketing Interactions), Lisa Arthur (Aprimo), Trish Bertuzzi (The Bridge Group Inc.), Karla Blalock (PointClear), Lisa Cramer (LeadLife Solutions), Debra da Costa (Direct Marketing Partners), Mary Dedrick (Performark),
Jeanne Hopkins (HubSpot), Laura McGuire (SmartTracks, Inc.), and Margery Murphy (Acadia Lead Management Services).

Then the second half of the alphabetical list includes Laurie Page (The Bridge Group, Inc.), Maria Pergolino (Marketo), Debbie Qaqish (The Pedowitz Group), Jill Rowley (Eloqua), Karen Sheehey (interlinkONE), Ruth Stevens (eMarketing Strategy), Erica Stritch (RAIN Group), Pelin Wood Thorogood (Schulman Thorogood), Jenny Vance (LeadJen), and Mari Anne Vanella (The Vanella Group).

Congrats to all the winners.

Yesterday morning, what we’re about to discuss would have looked like bad news, and even now, it’s not exactly great. But following the Dow’s 1,000-point plunge yesterday afternoon, people in the sales business may still find it a relief to know that April retail sales numbers showed small declines in spending.

Here’s a dataset put together by Sy Harding: “Teenager favorite Aeropostale (ARO) reported its April sales fell 5%; Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) sales fell 7%; American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) saw its sales decline 6%; The Gap (GPS) reported its April sales fell 3%; Target (TGT) reported a 5.9% decline; Dillard’s (DDS) sales fell 5%; Kohl’s (KSS) sales dropped 7.7%’; J.C. Penney’s (JCP) April sales fell 3.3%.”

Then other companies, including Macy’s, Nordstrom, and TJX, managed to post small gains, preventing the news from being all negative.

And again, it’s necessary to consider that the Dow took a significant beating yesterday, closing down 3.2 percent (or 347.80 points) even after having a bit of time to recover from the crash that’s rumored to have been caused by a typo.

So stay on your toes, sales pros, but don’t go into full-on financial apocalypse mode just yet.

Just about every company aims to sell things, and just about every company puts some effort into the process. At the same time, businesses can’t go too far – spending $600 million on a marketing campaign that’ll only appeal to people over 106 is no good – so a recent study examined whether digital marketing tends to prove profitable.

The short answer, as determined by PROMO Magazine and reported by eMarketer, is “maybe.” PROMO surveyed some marketers, and although rather few of them had a problem with digital marketing, a whopping 44.7 percent marked either “Do not measure,” “Do not know,” or “Does not apply.”

But 34.0 percent of respondents thought interactive marketing is more profitable than traditional types, and another 13.9 percent said it’s equally profitable. Only 7.4 percent felt the newfangled approach is worse, which is encouraging.

What’s more, as results from 2007 and 2008 were stacked up against the 2009 numbers, it was apparent that interactive marketing is becoming more well-regarded as time goes by.

So if you’re looking to increase sales and haven’t fully embraced the online world, this may be a good route for you to take. Beat your competitors to using digital marketing, and you might even see some larger-than-usual gains and solidify a foothold.
